Canary Cure, a biotechnology company at the forefront of RNA therapeutics, today announced the start of in vivo trials for its lead proprietary candidate, CCT-217. This first-in-class dual siRNA therapeutic targets peripheral CB1 receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), while simultaneously activating the body’s natural fat-burning potential by “browning” of white fat, offering a new approach to combating obesity and metabolic dysfunction. The in vivo studies in mice are designed based on an abundance of preclinical data that demonstrate the therapy’s ability to silence the gene responsible for CB1R expression, exclusively targeting receptors located in peripheral tissues like adipose tissue and the gastrointestinal tract. The studies also demonstrated negligible uptake of CCT-217 into the brain, confirming the safety of this peripheral targeting strategy.
